A Kaduna-bound passenger train derailed on Tuesday morning shortly after departing Abuja at 11:09 am. The train derailed at Asham, along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor.
The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) announced the incident via its official X account. According to the television in a video shared, several coaches off the track, with passengers including women, children and men crawling out of the train.
A passenger in the incident described the situation as "chaotic." Another passenger explained that she had been sitting in the last compartment, and when the train finally stopped and she stepped out, she saw that several other coaches had toppled over, with crowds of people standing nearby.
It remained unclear what caused the derailment, and there has been no official confirmation of injuries or casualties.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of its Kaduna-bound AKTS trains was involved in a derailment. According to the corporation, the incident happened at about 11:09 a.m. along the track, specifically at Kilometer 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations.
NRC’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, explained that rescue operations were immediately activated, with emergency responders, medical teams, and nearby hospitals placed on alert.
He also assured that security personnel were already at the scene and that arrangements were underway to safely transport all passengers back to Abuja.
