Microsoft Azure Cloud Service Has Been Restored After Red Sea Submarine Cable Disruptions

The service was restored on Saturday evening, same day the disruptions happened in the Red Sea.

One of the BigTech companies Microsoft has confirmed that its Azure Cloud Service has been restored in Middle East and Asia after an unknown incidents that caused disruptions to submarine cables in the Red Sea on Saturday.

If you can recall, Zazzetti reported the incident, confirming that Azure customers were experiencing an increase in latency.

The incident happened on Saturday morning and by evening, Microsoft said that the latency issue was resolved by rerouting Azure traffic through other network paths.

It's unclear what caused the cable cuts and whether the cables have been restored.

Microsoft's Azure is the second largest cloud service in the world and the infrastructure also relies on routing services through the Red Sea's undersea cables to reach its customers worldwide.

In response to the cable damages, Microsoft said that the cables "can take time to repair" and that it "will continuously monitor, rebalance, and optimize routing to reduce customer impact in the meantime."

The full restoration often takes weeks (sometimes months), because of the logistical challenges of deploying repair ships and navigating politically sensitive waters.

Undersea cable networks are designed with redundancy. When one cable fails, automated routing systems redirect traffic through alternate paths but with slow speed because the traffics load will be much on the dependable network paths.
