Google is introducing its AI assistant Gemini to Google TV today with TCL’s QM9K series TVs be the first to offer the AI assistant. However, plans are in place to get GEMINI on more devices, TVs, and streaming boxes running Google TV before this year runs out.
In other words, Gemini AI assistant will be coming later this year to devices like: Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn 4K Pro, 2025 models of Hisense (U7, U8, UX), and more TCL models ( like QM7K, QM8K, X11K) that will get Gemini later.
However, it's important to note that it's not all the Google TV devices that'll get this AI feature at the same time or immediately after rollout; there is a phased rollout that allows Google to gradually introduce Gemini, test its performance, fix potential issues, and make sure that it's compatible across different models and regions before making it widely available.
Features of Gemini AI on Google TV
Gemini is meant to go beyond what Google Assistant currently does on TVs, but the basic commands are never left behind. Gemini will carry forward the basic commands of Google Assistant, for example, starting a particular show upon request, and offers more exclusive features.
Gemini brings a more natural and conversational way to interact with your TV. You can now follow-up questions and have a “free-flowing conversations” with the AI assistant. For instance, you might ask it to find “the hospital drama everyone’s talking about” and then follow up by requesting reviews. It makes searching feel smoother and closer to a real conversation.
In addition to that, Gemini on Google TV now makes content discovery to become seamless with suggestions tailored to your mood, favorite genres, or even what works best for group viewing. You can also get explanations, quick summaries, or learn new things through YouTube videos right on your screen.
For instance, you can ask broader questions such as “why do volcanoes erupt?” or “what’s a dessert I can make in less than an hour?" The AI assistant will provide text responses that are read aloud, along with suggestions for related YouTube videos.
But the most important note you must know is that all the usual Google Assistant voice commands still work, Gemini simply enhances them rather than replacing the familiar features you already use. So, Gemini AI on Google TV is more of an upgrade, not a replacement of voice-control features.
Activating Gemini AI on Google TV
The Gemini AI assistant is easy to activate on Google TV. Aside from paying for your monthly TV or streamin service, you don’t have to pay extra to activate or use Gemini AI on a Google TV.
The Gemini features are included as part of the Google TV software update, so once your device is eligible and receives the update, you can start using them at no additional charge.
So, to activate the Gemini AI assistant on Google TV, kindly say “Hey Google” or pressing the mic button on your TV remote, and the AI assistant will be at your service.
Google’s introduction of Gemini AI to TVs is for the purpose of tightening its strategy of pushing Gemini as the successor to (or enhancement of) Google Assistant across more devices.
The tech giant believes that by bringing its AI model to TVs, it is signaling that it doesn’t just see this AI as a phone or web tool, but as a unified assistant meant to power the entire ecosystem of smart devices—from smartphones and tablets to home entertainment and beyond.
Meanwhile, it's worth noting that Gemini AI on Google TV won’t be the only AI assistant on the TV market; it has now become a competitive move. other manufacturers including Samsung and LG announced at CES 2025 that they're also integrating Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant into their smart TVs that'll be debuting this year.
